6 Days in Southern Sri Lanka: My Ultimate Coastal & Hill Country Road Trip
By Kasindu Thenuwara | May 2025
Why We Took This Trip
After years away from my homeland, I had this wild idea — to explore a side of Sri Lanka I’d
never really seen before. As someone who’s traveled abroad but never fully embraced Sri
Lanka’s own southern coastline and central highlands, I knew it was time.
So, I rallied my mates, packed up, and hit the road. What followed was a 6-day journey filled
with surf, rainstorms, wild animals, spicy food, village kindness, and unforgettable
memories — from Koggala to Galle, via Ella and Diyathalawa.
Day 1 – Koggala: Calm Before the Adventure
We kicked things off at our friend’s home and made our way to Koggala. Tucked between a
serene lagoon and the ocean, this was the perfect soft landing.
The evening was moody — a gentle rain rolled in just as we arrived. Too tired to explore much,
we decided to rest up. And honestly, Koggala’s quiet, coastal charm is ideal for unwinding
before hitting the road hard.

Day 2 – Mirissa & Hiriketiya: Beach-Hopping & First Surfs
We woke up early, excited for Mirissa. Cafés popped up along the way, and we stopped at a
few — a flat white and an ocean view always sets the tone right.
But the real surprise came later: Hiriketiya Beach. None of us had ever been, and it completely
blew us away. A little surfer’s paradise wrapped in jungle. The waves were rolling, music played
in beach cafés, and the vibe was unbeatable.
We ended the night in Tangalle, where the only sound was the sea crashing beyond our
windows.

Day 3 – Blue Beach & Ridiyagama Safari
Tangalle gave us more than rest. We stopped by Blue Beach, a tiny slice of turquoise paradise
before heading inland for something wilder: Ridiyagama Safari Park.
Inside a caged safari jeep, we had lions staring us down just meters away, watched Sri Lanka’s
only African elephants roam, and even saw lion cubs. What stood out most? The animals
looked healthy, free-moving, and well cared for — a refreshing sight.
But by 3 PM… yep, the rain came again. And this time, it meant we had to brace for a rough
uphill journey to Diyathalawa. Slippery roads, fog, and curves — but our driver handled it like a
pro.

Day 4 – Diyathalawa: Mountain Hospitality
We stayed at a simple, clean two-star guesthouse run by a lovely family. The upstairs was
rented out, and the mom, her two sons, and daughter treated us like long-lost relatives.
Diyathalawa itself was peaceful — green hills, crisp air, and a genuine community feel. It
reminded us of how beautiful and kind rural Sri Lanka really is.

Day 5 – Ella: Misty Mountains & Nightlife
Next stop? Ella. Once a hidden gem, now a full-on hotspot — and rightly so.
We explored the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, wandered through tea fields, and even caught a
glimpse of the night scene. Ella had just the right amount of buzz without feeling overrun. A
perfect transition from serenity to liveliness.

Day 6 – Galle Fort, Crafts & Madu Ganga Safari
We wrapped things up in style at Galle, Sri Lanka’s historic coastal city.
We visited a traditional mask workshop, witnessing the ancient art of mask carving — an
experience that makes you appreciate Sri Lankan culture even more. After that, we headed for
the Madu Ganga River Safari, cruising past mangroves, cinnamon farms, and temples resting
on islets.
By the end of the day, we were back where we started — tired, happy, and completely in love
with the country again.

Final Thoughts
This 6-day road trip reminded me of something simple: Sri Lanka doesn’t need to try hard to
impress — its beauty is effortless. From golden beaches and misty hills to wild safaris and
village smiles, every turn had something different.
That’s how you truly travel Sri Lanka.
